Okay everyone, today we've got a special treat for you; a personal interview with one of our awesome fabric sponsors, Janice from Urban Sew! Thanks for being here, Janice! I think every seamstress at one time or another dreams about owning a fabric shop, why did you start your fabric shop?
We started our fabric shop when my husband was out of work – not the best time for a financial investment! He was previously a journalist, and since actual newspapers are really a thing of the past, he has had to re-invent himself. We combined my love of sewing with his new career – web development and web content writing. Our goal is to *someday* open a brick and mortar shop….no idea when or where, but it’s something we both would love to do!
That worked out really well, and we're certainly glad for Urban Sew! So what is the best thing about owning a fabric shop?
Well, obviously, the fabric! It also gives me the opportunity to go to trade shows and see what’s going on in the world of fabric. One very cool thing that we’re excited for is Quiltcon 2016 in Pasadena this February – we’re going to have a booth there. This is our first time doing a show like this, and we are super-excited!
Oh, wow! I've never been to a trade show, but have stalked the hashtags on social media! It's on my bucket list. So with all those amazing fabric choices at hand, I have a question; what fabric did you sew with most recently?
I’m currently sewing with some melton wool from our shop - yes, it’s about 90 degrees here and I plan on making my child model a wool jacket! After that, I’ve got a ton of white fabric ready to be made into school uniform shirts, and a ton of navy blue ready to be made into school uniform skirts/jumpers. Not very exciting at all….
Well you do have such a cute little model to sew for! I just finished making a bag with some fabric from your shop, and have my eye on this fabric next. Becca says her favorite fabric is this one. And of course we always hit up the sale and $6 sections of your shop before we check out! Unfortunately though, Becca and I have both been having sewing machine issues lately, and we've both been looking at new sewing machines. Tell me about your sewing machine(s):
I generally sew and embroider using my Brother SE400….sadly, it’s currently not working. So, my sewing is now being done on my daughter’s Janome Hello Kitty machine! I have an old Elna serger – I do believe that it’s at least 21 years old. It’s a total workhorse. I also have a vintage Kenmore regular sewing machine that I bought from Goodwill for $25. It needs a tune up – so, bottom line is that I really have to find time to take two of my machines in for repair!
Oh, no! It sounds like your sewing machines have been acting up too! Hopefully we'll all make it through this crisis. Do you have any other hobbies?
My other hobbies really revolve around my kids’ sports and dogs. My older kids did gymnastics, soccer and basketball. My youngest daughter does tennis, basketball, soccer, and dance. I am currently the coach of her soccer team. My number two hobby is our pets – we adopted a new puppy about 8 months ago, and it’s really been like having a new baby – potty training, behavior training, and general taking care of the pup. It’s a serious time commitment, but definitely worth it!
Thanks so much for your time today, it was great to get an inside peek into Urban Sew. We encourage everyone to check out Urban Sew for all your Top Stitcher fabric needs. Oh, and they have patterns too!
